Heroin vs. Fentanyl: Understanding Today's Opioid Landscape
In 2024, Los Angeles County recorded 1,263 fentanyl-related overdose deaths — 91% of all opioid fatalities. Heroin sold on the street is almost always contaminated with fentanyl, and in many cases fentanyl has replaced heroin entirely. That shift has made heroin use dramatically more dangerous, even for long-term users with established tolerance. Treatment today must account for combined heroin and fentanyl dependence.
Medical Detox for Heroin
Heroin and fentanyl both produce physical opioid dependence. Withdrawal begins 8–12 hours after the last use and involves severe muscle pain, nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, anxiety, and powerful cravings. Through Sunrise Wellness, medical detox programs in our network provide 24-hour monitoring, buprenorphine and other medications to reduce withdrawal severity, and continuous clinical support to prevent relapse during the most vulnerable window.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Dependence
Buprenorphine (Suboxone), methadone, and naltrexone (Vivitrol) are the three FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder. All three reduce overdose risk and relapse. The clinical team at the program will determine which medication, if any, fits your situation, and integrate it into the overall treatment plan.
Residential Heroin Treatment
Detox addresses physical dependence. Residential treatment addresses the behavioral patterns, emotional drivers, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions that underlie long-term opioid use. Without structured therapeutic work following detox, relapse rates are very high. Residential programs in our network provide the time, structure, and clinical support needed to build a durable foundation for recovery.
Does Insurance Cover Heroin Rehab in California?
Yes. Opioid use disorder — including heroin dependence — is a covered condition under California's SB 855 parity law. Most PPO plans cover both medical detox and residential treatment. Call (213) 436-1475 for a free insurance verification.
